Withdrawal akathisia

Akathisia does not only happen after starting a medication. It can also appear after reducing, missing, or stopping a medication. This is often described as withdrawal or rebound akathisia.

What it may feel like

  • Intense inner agitation or discomfort
  • A sense of terror, doom, or being unable to settle
  • Restlessness, pacing, rocking, or constant shifting
  • Insomnia or inability to rest
  • Feeling like something is deeply wrong

Why timing matters

Withdrawal or rebound akathisia may arise after discontinuation or a dose reduction. Akathisia Alliance and RACGP both describe withdrawal or rebound akathisia as usually occurring within six weeks of discontinuation or dose decrease.
